College Grad Posing Guide

Congratulations grad…you did it! Graduating college is a huge achievement that should be celebrated and captured to remember for years to come.

I’ve been photographing college seniors since I was in college myself - in 2017! I’ve had dozens of college seniors across four campuses and three states, and I’ve picked my tried and true poses that will make you look your best. This guide breaks down simple, natural posing ideas that photograph beautifully and still feel like you, so your images look timeless. Let’s get started!

A few things you might need:

A grad cap

I love seeing decorated grad caps, it’s such a cool way to encapsulate your experience in college. Try to glue your decor down securely in case there’s a breeze, and don’t forget the tassel!

Plain cap? No problem - still bring it along as it’s a staple accessory for your grad photos.

Your gown, stoles, cords, etc.

Most of my grads don’t love taking photos in the full gown, it’s usually too big and long and can look little frumpy. Bring it anyways - we’ll take a few photos in the full getup for Mom + Dad and then use the gown sparingly as a prop. Stoles and cords are an awesome addition; if you have multiple stoles I suggest bringing double-sided tape to keep them from moving around too much.

Flat shoes to walk in

Campus feels like a long walk when you’re wearing heels with a pointed toe. Save yourself the pain and suffering and bring some crocs or flats to get from point A to point B.

Varsity jacket, trophies, and accolades

This is your time to celebrate your achievements and education! Bring any other props that you feel showcases your experience at school.

A bottle of champagne

A classic prop for college grad photos. Pop the cork, give it a shake, and let’s celebrate.

Now let’s get to the good stuff!

Pose 1: Hold your cap

A staple for grad photos, and a good warm-up to get you comfortable in front of the camera. I always suggest holding it with both hands from the bottom, alternating one hand on top and one on bottom, or holding down by your side for full-body photos.

Pose 2: Walking towards your future

Grab your cap, gown, and stoles and walk towards whatever lies ahead. Take a quick peek back at your photographer for a candid moment!

Pose 3: Sitting on the lawn

Consider the length of your dress if you’re wearing one! It’s always a great option to get a few photos sitting on the campus lawn.

Pose 4: Raise your cap (or bottle)

Nothing says “I did it!” more than raising your arms in celebration. Grab your cap or a bottle of champagne, raise it up, and give a little kick while you’re at it.

Pose 5: Over the shoulder

Does the back of your dress have intricate details or maybe a cutout? Look over your shoulder and show off your assets!

Pose 6: Pop a squat

I’ve recently started doing this and it’s become one of my favorite poses! It looks super elegant with heels and a grad cap in hand.
