Best Photo Locations In DeKalb, Illinois

By Elsye J Photography - Northern IL and Southern WI photographer

Just 60 miles west of Chicago sits a quaint little town where I’ve called home for almost two years! DeKalb has plenty of hidden gems with parks, forest preserves, and a historic downtown…the perfect backdrop for any portrait session. Here are some of my faves:

Downtown DeKalb

Get an urban background with small-town charm in downtown!

Some of the more photogenic spots include the murals, the Debutantes School building (hello retro theater & neon DeKalb sign), the Fargo Skateboarding block, and the alleyway next to There’s Fun In Store. There’s also a few parks nearby and plenty of picturesque storefronts!

One important thing to note: photographing on train tracks is illegal and incredibly dangerous! Please do not consider taking photos on the tracks.

NIU Campus

Northern Illinois University has quite a few gorgeous spots on campus! Your typical locations include The Lagoon and The Castle, but have you considered Swen Parson Hall, Davis Hall Fountains, or the Stevenson Raised Garden?

There’s so many trees, fountains, gardens, and historic buildings that make a great backdrop for photoshoots.

Ellwood House

The Ellwood Mansion consists of historic architecture and beautiful gardens. Photography is allowed on the grounds and in the building with no fee required, however flash photography is not allowed indoors.

Hopkins Park

Hopkins Park has so much potential for quality photos! I personally like using the trees, tall grasses & wildflowers, and the bridge. I’m excited to utilize this spot in the fall once the colors turn.

P.A. Nehrig Forest Preserve

Although it’s fairly green during the summer, this hidden forest preserve off Bethany Road will be PERFECT in the fall! I love the options of open fields and wooded paths, which allows for so much variety in a portrait shoot.

Bonus Location: Jonamac Orchard

Jonamac Orchard is locally-owned and based in Malta, IL just outside of DeKalb! It’s the cutest fall attraction with apple picking, a corn maze, and sunflowers in the summer. There is a small entry fee, but TOTALLY worth it.
